GivingTuesday 2023

Upper Peninsula of Michigan’s Local Campaign

#Give906

Considering giving to a charitable organization in the Upper Peninsula this giving season? The #Give906 Giving Guide is here for you! This is a one-stop place to learn what charitable organizations are doing to meet critical needs across the U.P. and how you can help this GivingTuesday and throughout the year.

The guide includes the name of each participating organization, a description of its GivingTuesday initiative and a link where you may donate and/or learn more about getting involved. The guide is coordinated by Grow & Lead: Community and Youth Development as part of the GivingTuesday global generosity movement which inspires people to give back on #GivingTuesday, Nov. 28, and throughout the year.

Grow & Lead encourages residents of the U.P. and those who hold the U.P. close to their hearts to consider giving to an organization in the 906 area code during this season of generosity.

“Nonprofit organizations have overcome and adpated these past years more than ever with great innovation and tenacity,” says Grow & Lead CEO Amy Quinn. “The #Give906 Giving Guide shows the ingenuity and passion of U.P. organizations to meet the needs of their communities and do meaningful work that transforms lives.”

You can help us raise critical funding now to accommodate the increasing number of children who need our program. Each January, fifth and sixth grade students participate in healthy cooking where they independently follow new recipes to learn to cook new healthy foods! This program has been a success. To offer quality education, the maximum number of students able to attend will be 15. The art camp will provide an opportunity for children to explore a variety of visual art forms and express themselves freely, thus promoting the self-esteem and enjoyment that comes from creating art. This experience will facilitate cognitive and social growth for the children by encouraging them to complete personal and group projects while interacting with instructors and each other. On the final day of the camp, an art display will showcase the best work from each child. Parents/guardians, families and friends will be invited to celebrate the art and growth of the student artists. The art camp will enhance participants’ well-being by bringing families together to explore art and culture.

Coalition to Save the Menominee River: Our goal is to raise funds necessary for impending legal fees. Aquila Resources recently sold its business interests to Gold Resource Corp. (GORO), which has told its investors that it plans to begin mining in 2024-2025. GORO also intends to fast-track the mining permit process by bundling all five permits needed to mine into one application. Educating as many people as possible about the many threats of this proposed mine is essential. Our long-term goals are to stop the mine before it starts, protect the ancestral homeland of the Menominee Tribe and continue our efforts to protect the Menominee River ecosystem. The river is home to one of the last remaining self-sustaining populations of sturgeon in the Lake Michigan watershed. A world-class smallmouth bass and walleye fishery thrives in the Menominee River.

Soo Locks Childrens Museum: For Giving Tuesday 2023, Soo Locks Children’s Museum is raising funds for our slapshot hockey exhibit, Superior Slapshot Systems (SSS). We are honored that a team of senior engineering students at Lake Superior State University has chosen to design and build a slapshot hockey exhibit for the Soo Locks Children’s Museum as their senior project during the 2023-24 school year. The exhibit will measure the speed and accuracy when a user shoots a puck at a hockey net. We are VERY excited to be working with this group of talented students — it’s a “win-win” in our book! With Sault Sainte Marie being the “original hockey town,” funding for our Slapshot Hockey exhibit is a fitting cause. Pictures of the planned exhibit are available at our Giving Page.
